Shore Excursion: Ostia Antica (Rome, Italy) – Cruise Cardinal

The Cruise Cardinal is on board the Celebrity Equinox, leaving Rome (Civitavecchia) in late November 2012. But before we board ship at the Civitavecchia port, we take a visit to Ostia Antica – what used to be the main port of Rome about 2,000 years ago.

This video shows the fantastic ruins of Ostia. This area was completely deserted when the Cardinal visited! But steeped in Roman history, the ruins are very, very interesting!

Traveling to Ostia Antica is very easy: use the Rome Metro to get to the Piramide Metro stop. That’s also the Roma Porta San Paolo train station. Follow the signs to “Lido” and take the train from Rome, stopping at the Ostia Antica station, about 30 KM (20 miles) away. Exit the train station and walk across the bridge! There is NO admission charge to the ruins, and it’s a marvelous way to spend a day.

If you’ve seen the touristy stuff in Rome, it’s worth a visit to the uncrowded Ostia Antica – see history close up! The Cruise Cardinal recommends you check out Rick Steves’ review HERE.

And no, this isn’t a review for the Carnival Triumph. The Cruise Cardinal wasn’t on that ship!

Thanks for watching!
